Amanuel Mehari
Chief, Migrant Protection Unit
Amanuel Mehari serves as the Chief of the Migrant Protection Unit at the International Organization for Migration (IOM), where he leads the strategic development and implementation of global initiatives aimed at safeguarding the rights of migrants. With a career spanning several years in the humanitarian and development sectors, Mr Mehari has become a leading voice in the effort to provide comprehensive protection to individuals in vulnerable situations, including victims of trafficking, exploited labour, and those stranded in crisis zones.
In his current capacity, he is responsible for overseeing IOM’s protection frameworks, ensuring that international standards are translated into effective field operations. His work involves close collaboration with national governments and international partners to harmonise migration policies with fundamental human rights. Mr Mehari is particularly noted for his expertise in navigating the operational challenges of migrant assistance in complex environments, advocating for a “protection-centred” approach that prioritises the dignity and safety of the individual throughout the migration cycle.
Prior to his current appointment, Mr Mehari held various senior roles within the IOM, contributing to the delivery of large-scale humanitarian programmes and policy reforms. His extensive field experience has provided him with a profound understanding of the drivers of irregular migration and the critical importance of multi-stakeholder cooperation in achieving safe, orderly, and humane migration management.
